DVLA & DSA >> Theory test

To obtain a full UK driving licence you must first pass a theory test which has two parts. Part one is a multiple choice test of 50 questions of which you must get 43 correct; part two is a hazard perception test of 14 video clips from which you will have to identify 15 developing hazards and obtain 44 marks out of 75 to pass.

The theory test is delivered using a touch screen computer and mouse and is carried out at an authorised test centre near to you, (which may not be the same centre from which you eventually take your practical test). You must pass the theory test before you can apply for a practical test and you must then pass the practical test within 2 years otherwise you will have to resit the theory test. The theory test can be conducted in a number of different languages and provision can also be made for candidates with learning difficulties or disabilities.

You do not need to pass your theory test before you take driving lessons so our recommendation would be for you to arrange your theory test as soon as you start learning to drive as it makes sense to prepare for this test whilst your are having professional lessons. This will help keep you focused on the task of learning and, in turn, will give your instructor a valuable insight into your attitude and ability and make the in-car lessons more relevant to you.
